DROPSTUFF.nl is a platform for media art which showcases a mixture of digital and interactive artworks by professional artists and creative products by the audience. These artworks are broadcasted live on a network of DS_HOTSPOTS (interfaces), which are situated in museums, art academies, libraries, and educational institutions, as well as at festivals and – from this summer – also in large Dutch railway stations.

The pavilion consists out of a large 4 by 14 meters LED display on which a number of interfaces are linked, located at various places in the Netherlands and on the website of DropStuff.

The Game of Life: Build or Bomb is an experimental simulation in which the user can choose to either create or destroy. From DS_HOTSPOTS on different locations in the Netherlands as well as from the Drop Stuff website, the public buildings being created or destoyed are shown on the large LED screen at Vrijthof. To place buildings the user can choose from iconic modern architecture pieces of Mies van der Rohe, Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas. To destroy buildings the user can choose out of various military equipment but also civil aircraft and vehicles. This all has been brought together in a Pixel Art eighties computer game design.

The initial task, to deal with freedom of expression in relation to visual media and contemporary youth culture, is translated into the visualization of a light-hearted social experiment, but with serious connotations and associations. Build Bomb or refers to two opposite properties that are connected to mankind: creation and destruction.
