The Bell Rock Lighthouse

Previous Interactive Portfolio website
April 2009

The Bell Rock lighthouse, built on the Bell Rock in the North Sea, dates back from 1810 and is the world's oldest surviving lighthouse of its kind. The challenges the building of the lighthouse entailed were so large that it is now regarded as one of the seven wonders of the industrial world.

I used the print made of and during the process of the construction as a basis for my portfolio. By using the analog medium, I put remediation into practice: the improvement of old media by new media. Furthermore, I create a metaphor between the process of the construction of the lighthouse and the process of creating my work. A lighthouse is widely regarded as an archetypal public good. I am accessible to people who may need help creating an interactive artwork.

The print can be divided into three phases. On the left: the concept stage. From here the bricks are brought to land, the place where the process begins. In the air and out of nothing an idea for a concept is being created. The development of the tower itself stands for the development and realisation of the concept. On the right the realisation is presented on a big screen.

How it works:

if you have a low resolution (1024x768) it's better to click on the square in the topright corner to view it full screen.
You'll have to click and drag to discover the prent. Your mission is to collect all the bricks (they will change in colour when you are near to them with your mouse. You can click on them and let go of them: they will fall down to the ground. You can also click on them and drag them. There is an arm following your mouse with a string attached to the hand. The other end of the string is attached to a little cart. When you put a brick into the cart or let the brick fall in it - you can also let a brick fall down on the ground and ride the cart towards the brick, it'll automatically get in the cart - the camera will move you to a hanging screen. A project will appear on this screen with thumbnails beneath it to click on. You can drag the art presented on the screen. There are 6 bricks total, the first already hangs on the rope in the topleft corner. You can click on it, that one is 'about me'. The ones you put in the cart will appear on the rope.
